See, I am sending an angel ahead of you to guard you along the way to bring you to the place I have prepared. Pay attention to him and listen to what he says. Do no rebel against him, he will not forgive your rebellion, since my Name is in him. (NKJV).

In this scripture the Lord is instructing the Israelites to listen to His messenger and that he will lead them to their promised land. We can take heart from this scripture today. There are time in our lives that we know that God is speaking to us through his messengers. God uses people to speak to us everyday. We need to open our hearts and listen to what he is trying to say to us. I know that I do not do this as often as I should. Well The reason I have not been writing is because the last time I wrote was just before my meeting with the Board of Ordained Ministry to see about commissioning. At that meeting I found that I would be deferred till next year. I had several problems with my paperwork and need to begin again. I know that it was my own fault and that this time I will be better prepared for the meeting next year. I guess the reason that I have not been online here is because I just did not know what to write about these past few weeks. So I am ready to return, write about the process that I will be going through and posting more devotionals to help me get through my day.

Always Enough

Instead of striving to get where you wish to go, simply allow yourself to be there. I am not sure how to begin. I don't know if this idea will work or not. I am not sure when I would find the time. When I look back on the ideas I did implement, my life was richer. So what have I learned about having ideas and making things happen? I have learned that getting started is the hardest part.

I have found the following keys help me take an idea and act on it.

1. Acknowledge that I don't know it all.
2. Realize that I know enough to begin.
3. Commit to learning as I go.
4. Accept that I can always do and be better.
5. Know that I will never be perfect nor will I ever do something perfectly.
6. Comprehend that I can rock my world if I just begin, do my best, and follow through to completion.

I have discovered through using StrengthsQuest that I am a Learner and an Achiever. I love to learn so while trying to get started I always learn many new things. Also as with number 4 above I realize as an Achiever I can accept that I can always do better. Instead of looking at our faults look at your strengths. We can achieve (start) anything if we put our minds to it.

So what idea do you have that will really impact your world and the world of those around you? Get started on it today.

Family

Why is it that sometimes the only time we see family is at a funeral or the holidays? (Genesis 18:14 KJV)

Are you afraid to ask God to do big things in your life? Is your faith threadbare and worn? If so, it's time to abandon your doubts and reclaim your faith in God's promises.

Ours is a God of infinite possibilities. But sometimes, because of limited faith and limited understanding, we wrongly assume that God cannot or will not intervene in the affairs of mankind. Such assumptions are simply wrong.

God's Holy Word makes it clear: absolutely nothing is impossible for the Lord. And since the Bible means what it says, you can be comforted in the knowledge that the Creator of the universe can do miraculous things in your own life and in the lives of your loved ones. Your challenge, as a believer, it to take God at His word, and to expect the miraculous.

Wesley and Grace

OK this week I had a meeting with my mentor about potential questions for my ordination process and we discussed John Wesley's meanings of grace. Below are the meanings of prevenient, justifying, and sanctifying grace as found in the UMC Discipline.

Wesley shared with many other Christians a belief in grace, justification, assurance, and sanctification, he combined them in a powerful manner to create distinctive emphases for living the full Christian life.

Grace pervades our understanding of Christian faith and life. By grace we mean the undeserved, unmerited, and loving action of God in human existence through the ever-present Holy Spirit. While the grace of God is undivided, it precedes salvation as "prevenient grace," continues in "justifying grace," and is brought to fruition in "sanctifying grace."

God's prevenient grace, the divine love that surrounds all humanity and precedes any and all of our conscious impulses. This grace prompts our first wish to please God, our first glimmer of understanding concerning God's will, and our "first slight transient conviction" of having sinned against God. God's grace also awakens in us an earnest longing for deliverance from sin and death and moves us toward repentance and faith.

God reaches out to the repentant believer in justifying grace with accepting and pardoning love. Wesleyan theology stresses that a decisive change in the human heart can and does occur under the prompting of grace and the guidance of the Holy Spirit. In justification we are, through faith, forgiven our sin and restored to God's favor.

Sanctifying grace draws us toward the gift of Christian perfection, which Wesley described as a heart "habitually filled with the love of God and neighbor" and as "having the mind of Christ and walking as he walked."

--UMC 2004 Discipline

The Self-Fulfilling Prophecy

Psalm 20:4 NKJV
May He grant you according to your heart's desire, and fulfill all your purpose.

The self-fulfilling prophecy is alive, well, and living at your house. If you trust God and have faith for the future, your optimistic beliefs will give you direction and motivation. That's one reason that you should never lose hope, but certainly not the only reason. The primary reason that you, as a believer, should never lose hope, is because of God's unfailing promises.

Make no mistake about it: thoughts are powerful things: your thoughts have the poser to lift you up or to hold you down. When you acquire the habit of hopeful thinking, you will have acquired a powerful tool for improving your life. So if you fall into the habit of negative thinking, think again. After all, God's Word teaches us that Christ can overcome every difficulty (John 16:33). That book id the Holy Bible. The Bible is a roadmap for life here on earth and for life eternal. How would you feel or react to that friend in his death? Think of Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus. Joseph a member of the Sanhedrin who asks Pilate for Jesus' body, and Nicodemus who was a Pharisee who assisted him with Jesus' body. Both Joseph and Nicodemus came and took down the body of Jesus, placed ointment on his body and then placed him in his shroud. Once they completed this loving act of preparing his body for burial they placed him in the tomb. It's difficult to see a loved one pass away. What makes it more difficult is to have to prepare his body for burial. What makes this a special moment is that both Joseph and Nicodemus were members of the ruling religious elite. They were members of the religious class that wanted Jesus put to death. This meant exposing their friendship with Jesus and risk they themselves being persecuted. To the contrary, God had given us the free will to follow His commandments ... or not.

When we stray from God's commandments, we invite bitter consequences. But, when we follow His commandments, and when we genuinely and humbly seek His will, He touches our hearts and leads us on the path of His choosing.

Will you trust God to guide your steps? You should. When you entrust your life to Him completely and without reservation, God will give you the strength to meet any challenge, the courage to face any trial, and the wisdom to live in His righteousness and in His peace. So trust Him today and seek His guidance. When you do, your next step will be the right one.

Say Goodbye to 4 More

I can now say goodbye to 4 more pounds. I just returned from San Francisco where I visited Yosemite National Park. (Yes, the photo of Half Dome is mine.) I was also taking my final two on campus courses at Asbury Theological Seminary. During this time, actually on Tuesdays, I was spending time in Dr. Robert Tuttle's “The Ministry of Evangelism” course and Dr. Beverly Johnson-Miller's “Older Adult Ministry” course. I was so blessed from both of these instructors and their classes. I think that daily I am using information from these courses in my life. There are evangelistic opportunities everyday that we have. Just the simplest of conversations can open the door to witness to someone. And even though I am not in a church setting I work with older adults everyday in my office and this information is very useful in these meetings.

Today I reflect upon the things that I was doing last year at this time. But today I also see how God is using me in ministry at my current position on a small community college campus. I feel very blessed by what God is using me for and I feel very blessed to be working with students at my campus.

Much you can do

You probably will not have an opportunity to save the whole world today. Yet you can definitely make some real and lasting progress.

The people with whom you come in contact may not all appreciate or understand you. Still, you can have a positive effect on some of those lives.

The events of this day are not all going to proceed according to your plans. Even so, you can create value from whatever comes your way.

Chances are that conditions will not be perfect and circumstances will not be ideal. Fortunately, there is much you can do with whatever you have.

Welcome to this gloriously flawed and wonderfully imperfect day. Come out to meet him!'
7"Then all the virgins woke up and trimmed their lamps. 8The foolish ones said to the wise, 'Give us some of your oil; our lamps are going out.'
9" 'No,' they replied, 'there may not be enough for both us and you. Instead, go to those who sell oil and buy some for yourselves.'
10"But while they were on their way to buy the oil, the bridegroom arrived. The virgins who were ready went in with him to the wedding banquet. And the door was shut.
11"Later the others also came. 'Sir! Sir!' they said. 'Open the door for us!'
12"But he replied, 'I tell you the truth, I don't know you.'
13"Therefore keep watch, because you do not know the day or the hour.

To day is Scout Sunday at our church. We have a strong scouting presence in the church. The Scouts lead the worship service today and they did a great job. The message was on Being Prepared and the scripture was Matthew 25:1-13. There were 10 virgins, five of which were prepared and five who were not prepared. Those who had enough oil to last them the night were able to make it to the wedding feast while those who did not had to leave and purchase oil thus missing the feast. When they tried to get in the bridegroom would not let them in because he stated that he did not know them. Jesus then tells us "keep watch, because you do not know the day or the hour." Here is talking about his return. We must be ever watchful for his return. If we are not watching he will come and we will miss him. We must always be watchful for the return of our Lord. We must always be prepared and ready for his return. Are you like our Boy Scouts, prepared? Be prepared, if you do not know the Lord seek him out so that you will not be left at the door while the feast is going on inside.

Why Do We Doubt?

John 20:25-28 (Holman Christian Standard Bible)
25 So the other disciples kept telling him, "We have seen the Lord!"
But he said to them, "If I don't see the mark of the nails in His hands, put my finger into the mark of the nails, and put my hand into His side, I will never believe!"
26 After eight days His disciples were indoors again, and Thomas was with them. Even though the doors were locked, Jesus came and stood among them. He said, "Peace to you!"
27 Then He said to Thomas, "Put your finger here and observe My hands. Reach out your hand and put it into My side. Don't be an unbeliever, but a believer."
28 Thomas responded to Him, "My Lord and my God!"

Why do we doubt the things that God can do? Why do we find it hard to trust in the unbelievable? Jesus told his disciples, even Thomas, that he would return. Thomas was loyal to Jesus saying that he would go and die with him. The only thing was that he did not understand that Jesus was going to die in the way that he did. This was something that Thomas could not understand. When the disciples told him that they have seen the risen Lord he could not believe it. He had to see it for himself. We like Thomas find it hard to believe that God can do the very thing that he is best at; replacing death with life. Our infertile imaginations bear little hope that the improbable will occur. We then, like Thomas, let our dreams fall victim to doubt. We make the same mistake that Thomas made; we forget that "impossible" is one of God's favorite words. So when you are in doubt remember you are in good company, Thomas. Thomas can show us that there is hope and that we need not doubt all that God can do.

Giving up during Lent

Lent is a forty day period before Easter set aside as a season of soul-searching and repentance. The forty days reflect Jesus’ withdrawal into the wilderness for his own time of spiritual reflection. Sundays, because they commemorate the Resurrection, are not counted. In the early church Lent was a special time when new converts were instructed in the faith and prepared for baptism on Easter.

My family during Lent usually gives something up during these 40 days. I know my mother always says "It's Sunday, I can have what I gave up today." The things that we usually give up in my house are usually food items; i.e. chocolate, bread, or deserts in general. We usually give up all those things we really love. So why? Jesus made the ultimate sacrifice in giving up his life for us. This ultimate sacrifice was made to offer us eternal life. Jesus gave us so much so that we could live. I think that we can give up just a little something during this time.

I'm giving up deserts during this time of Lent. I'm hoping by not having deserts for 40 days will help me in my efforts to loose weight for my ordination process, as well as remind me what the Lenten season is all about. The ultimate giving of God's only son to save the world from sin. So what are you giving up this year?

Its Ash Wednesday

Ash Wednesday is a time for repentance and the beginning of Lent. Ashes were used in ancient times, according to the Bible, to express penitence. On this day ashes are placed on the foreheads of the faithful to remind them of death, of the sorrow they should feel for their sins, and of the necessity of changing their lives. The practice, which dates from the early Middle Ages, is common among Roman Catholics, Anglicans and Episcopalians, and many Lutherans; it was also adopted by some Methodists and Presbyterians in the 1990s.

So today we observe that time where we repent of our sins to God. We come to the altar to seek forgiveness while the pastor places the ashes on our forehead in the sign of the cross. This is the time that we come to the Lord seeking forgiveness and receiving that fresh start of a new day.

Prayer of Confession:
Psalm 51 (New International Version)
1 Have mercy on me, O God, according to your unfailing love; according to your great compassion blot out my transgressions. 2 Wash away all my iniquity and cleanse me from my sin. 3 For I know my transgressions, and my sin is always before me. 4 Against you, you only, have I sinned and done what is evil in your sight, so that you are proved right when you speak and justified when you judge. 6 Surely you desire truth in the inner parts; you teach me wisdom in the inmost place. 7 Cleanse me with hyssop, and I will be clean; wash me, and I will be whiter than snow. 8 Let me hear joy and gladness; let the bones you have crushed rejoice. 9 Hide your face from my sins and blot out all my iniquity. 10 Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me. 11 Do not cast me from your presence or take your Holy Spirit from me. 12 Restore to me the joy of your salvation and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me.

Enthusiastic Faith

Colossians 3:23 (Holman Christian Standard Bible)

23 Whatever you do, do it enthusiastically, as something done for the Lord and not for men,

Are you genuinely excited about your faith? As part of that the UMC has specific educational requirements, requirements of preaching and teaching, as well as health requirements. For me the biggest struggle is the health requirement, namely weight. I have been working with Jenny for eight months so far and today was a weigh in. I lost 3.25 pounds this month. That gives me a total of 18 pounds so far. Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Years were a struggle with all the food that was brought into work and all the different holiday parties. I need to loose quite a bit more but I know that it will be a long road to travel.

I go before the ordination board in March and hope between now and then to loose at least 5 - 6 more pounds. I'm beginning to get a little nervous about the meeting with the board. But hopefully working with Larry, my mentor, will help prepare me for it. More to come on the process and that actual meeting later!

Second Chance: Mark 16:1-7

Yesterday I wrote about Peter's denial of Jesus in the book of Luke. Today, in Mark, Jesus gives Peter a second chance.

Mark 16: 1When the Sabbath was over, Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome bought spices so that they might go to anoint Jesus' body. 2Very early on the first day of the week, just after sunrise, they were on their way to the tomb 3and they asked each other, "Who will roll the stone away from the entrance of the tomb?" 4But when they looked up, they saw that the stone, which was very large, had been rolled away. 5As they entered the tomb, they saw a young man dressed in a white robe sitting on the right side, and they were alarmed. 6"Don't be alarmed," he said. "You are looking for Jesus the Nazarene, who was crucified. He has risen! He is not here. See the place where they laid him. 7But go, tell his disciples and Peter, 'He is going ahead of you into Galilee. There you will see him, just as he told you.' "

Pay close attention to verse 7. The angel tells the women to make sure that they especially go and tell Peter. WOW, Peter got his second chance. The Lord wanted him to know that he was forgive for denying him just three days before. How low could someone feel that they had turned on their best friend? But, then how high could they feel when that friend makes sure that a message is delivered especially to him that all is forgiven. I am back and waiting for you. Hurry and get here soon.

Jesus does that for us every day. Yesterday I said that there are days that we turn our back on Jesus. Maybe it’s from pressure from our friends or the world around us. But the message in Mark here is to remind us that Jesus wants us to know that we are forgiven and he is giving us a second chance. So don't waste that second chance. Grab hold of it and let everyone you know know that Jesus is giving them that second chance as well. It's never too late to know him and receive that experience.

Never Disown Him; Luke 22:61

Luke 22:61 - The Lord turned and looked straight at Peter. Then Peter remembered the word the Lord had spoken to him: "Before the rooster crows today, you will disown me three times."

Even one of the greatest of the disciples has disowned or denied Jesus. We tend to forget Christ at particular moments in our lives. We tend to forget him when it becomes convenient for us. We need to remember we are Christians 24/7. We cannot choose when we will follow Christ. The world knows us by our actions. We must be Christians, Christ followers, al the time. We witness the strongest by our actions.

Why Psychotic Pastor

OK, why name a blog Psychotic Pastor? Well, I recently graduated from Asbury Theological Seminary and I'm in the process of being ordained as a deacon in the United Methodist Church. That explains the pastor but what about the psychotic? I also have a MA degree in counseling from Trevecca Nazarene Univeristy and I'm an advisor/counselor and psychology instructor at Volunteer State Community College.

So this blog will be about the days and trials of a Psychotic Pastor, someone in the ordination process, a counselor and instructor to college students. Keep checking in and see what's going on in my life and my process towards ordination.
